Scientists have uncovered a particularly large meteorite fragment from the meteor show over the Ural region on February 15. The fragment is in the possession of Russia’s Urals Federal University and reported to weigh more than 1 kilogram. The above video was uploaded to a YouTube channel of the university on February 25, showing the meteor piece.

SPACE - [PUBLIC] NASA developing lunar mining robot - February 26

NASA is developing a lunar mining robot that could help astronauts journey deeper into space. The soil on the moon and Mars contains methane and water, which could be extracted and used for rocket fuel and breathing air. As scientist Rob Mueller explains in this video, 90 percent of a rocket’s mass on takeoff is fuel, so “if we can make the propellant on the moon or on Mars, we don’t have to bring it from Earth”.

Now, I think that’s a virtue. I think that’s something worth fighting for.”

The influx of Syrian refugees into Jordan continues, with thousands reportedly crossing the border on a daily basis. These videos, uploaded by a YouTube user based in the town of Ash Shajarah in the Daraa governorate, show a large amount of refugees queuing to cross the Jordanian border near the Al Wahda Dam. The uploader has been providing videos from this location, approximately 4km south of Ash Shajarah, for a number of days.

The anti-whaling Sea Shepherd group has for several weeks been attempting to disrupt what it claims is illegal whaling by Japanese vessels in Australian Antarctic Territory. On February 25, it reported that it had “successfully blocked a third attempt to refuel the Japanese whaling fleet”. During this action, it said, “Captain Tomoyuki Ogawa of the whale butchering ship Nisshin Maru rammed Sea Shepherd ships Bob Barker and Sam Simon.”

The Algerian gas plant that was attacked by al-Qaeda-linked gunmen in January has partially resumed production. The Tiguentourine plant had been closed since the attack. The Algerian army ended January’s hostage crisis by storming the complex, but 29 insurgents and at least 37 hostages were killed. The plant is now operating at about a third of capacity according to reports. This video was uploaded on February 26 by the Algeria Press Service.
